Calls For City of Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda To Resign Intensify

Kabelo Gwamanda Holds Firm as Johannesburg Mayor Amid Calls for Change

Johannesburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda is currently holding onto his position despite ongoing discussions about electing a new mayor.

Gwamanda, who took office in May 2023 after Thapelo Amad’s resignation, is the eighth mayor since the 2016 local elections.

ActionSA has set three key conditions for its support of a new government in Johannesburg, starting with Gwamanda’s removal.

The party’s leader, Herman Mashaba, also demands the reversal of the R200 surcharge on prepaid electricity and improvements in city services and infrastructure.

In response, Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks stated that no ANC structure has requested Gwamanda’s resignation.

He suggested that disagreements within the ANC, particularly from Dada Morero’s faction, are driving the push for a new mayor.

As of now, the ANC appears ready to field its own candidate, with reports indicating that Dada Morero may replace Gwamanda.

However, Gwamanda has expressed that the decision lies with the political parties involved, and he is committed to stabilizing Johannesburg’s administration, regardless of who leads the city.
